Cape Verdeans of Southern California, established in 1983, is a Non-Profit Organization serving the Cape Verdean communities in the Greater Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Diego Counties areas.
How it all began...
The organization began when a small group of people held a meeting on November 14, 1982. Their purpose was to determine how many Caboverdianos lived in the Greater Los Angeles area, and to discuss the possibility of establishing their own group.
Now, over twenty-five years later, the Cape Verdeans of Southern California has grown into a highly effective organization contributing to the advancement of fellow Caboverdianos throughout Southern California and the Diaspora. Supported solely by its Membership and local supporters of Cape Verdean and Non-Cape Verdean Ancestry.
The organization has sponsored many social and cultural events throughout the years. We have been involved with numerous community groups highlighting our unique culture. Through our newsletter and web site we have attempted to educate, publicize, and communicate our goals, objectives, and activities.
We have also provided school supplies to four schools on the Islands of Brava, Boa Vista, Sao Tiago, and Fogo to support students in their education. Our organization has responded to special requests for financial aid to assist in obtaining medical supplies for hospitals on the Cape Verde islands.
With the establishment of the "Tiny Lopes Scholarship Fund", academic scholarships have been awarded each year to many deserving students throughout the United States.
Our primary goals and objectives:
- To provide a forum to discuss, enhance, and preserve the culture of the Republic of Cabo Verde and Caboverdianos in the United States and the Diaspora.
- To also expose Caboverdiano culture to other ethnic groups.
- To promote culture and economic exchanges between the Republic of Cabo Verde and the United States.
- To inform, educate, and teach our members the language, culture, and traditions of the Caboverdianos.
- To provide intellectual and athletic sponsorship programs for our youth.
- To conduct cultural, educational, and charitable activities that are beneficial to the Republic of Cabo Verde and the Caboverdiavno American Community.
- To operate as a charitable organization as defined in the Federal Tax Code Section 501c(3).
